Answers

  • Besides scholarships, are there any advantages or benefits of being a member of Phi Theta Kappa?
The simple answer is: Now. Scholarship deadlines are throughout the year. The earliest deadlines are fall term for the following fall term. For example, the All-USA and Guistwhite deadlines are at the beginning of December. Please note that the December deadline is for your college to nominate their candidates. Most colleges have an earlier deadline, which could be mid November.

Another fairly early deadline is for the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship. The nomination deadline is in early February, and most colleges have a mid-January deadline for application submissions.

One good way to learn about scholarship deadlines is to enroll with College Fish. While the program is still developing, it will match colleges and scholarships to your specific requirements. There are college-based scholarships as well as state, national, and international scholarships. College Fish is free and well worth examining. All Phi Theta Kappans may enroll using their member number.

Benefits are explained in great detail on the Phi Theta Kappa web site, and here are a few worth noting:
    • Membership looks very good on resumes, college admission applications, and scholarship applications. (It gives interviewers something to ask you about, and explaining your involvement will allow you to show your skills in action.)
    • There are leadership opportunities that may allow you to step outside your comfort zone and assume new roles within a supportive environment.
    • Phi Theta Kappa will write letters of recommendation for potential employers and scholarship and college applications.
    • You may wear all the bling at graduation, and most colleges affix a gold Phi Theta Kappa seal on your diploma and indicate membership on transcripts.
    • Phi Theta Kappa is an international organization, and being a member connects you with members throughout the world. This allows for networking should you relocate and want to find alumni in your new area.
    • The one-time fee provides you with life-time membership. Even if you do not see any of the above benefits worthwhile today, they may become very import in a few years.
