Phi Theta Kappa
Rocky Mountain Cascade Region

2011-2012 Regional Officers

Matthew
Matthew E. Ray
President
Lane Community College
Eugene, Oregon

Once I joined Phi Theta Kappa, my intent was to gain as much leadership experience as I could handle. Being a former Marine, I wanted to build upon the leadership skills I had learned while serving and motivate others around me in a positive way. I wanted to make a difference on my campus and give my time and effort to becoming more than just an A student. I feel that having more responsibility during your time in college prepares you for the world outside academia and gives you opportunities to give back and help others find their way to success.

Leading from the front has always been the way I conduct business in the scholastic and professional arenas. I strive for perfection, but settle for excellence as I envision the outcomes of any given task and try to execute them as close to the vision as possible. Continually learning and building my professional character is something I hold great value in, and there are no better places where people can truly test themselves than being the faces of an organization.

David Spencer
Vice President
Utah Valley University
Orem, Utah

My home state is the great state of Utah. I am the 8th of 11 children. I grew up on a farm learning firsthand about hard work and dedication. I enjoy almost any form of physical activity especially outdoor activities. My hobbies include biking, running, badminton, volleyball, and swimming. The most exotic place I have been to is the British Virgin Islands down in the Caribbean.

I am a junior at Utah Valley University. I just finished my associate's degree in math. I am now working toward my bachelors in Math Education. This will be my third year at Utah Valley University and my second involved in Phi Theta Kappa. I am a two-time chapter officer and regional officer as well as a former candidate for International Officer.

Ghandi once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." This quote has been my favorite quote and has helped me through the rough times in life. This quote is what brought the leadership side of me out. It always reminded me that if ever I found something that I didn't like that it was up to me to fix it. I must lead by example.

Let us make the Rocky Mountain Cascade Region the region of example. Let us lead the way for other regions to follow in our fantastic foot prints.

I am a student at Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus and have been attending since fall 2009. After obtaining a one-year Accounting Clerk Certificate in June of 2010, I am currently pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Botany. I plan to continue my studies at OSU for a Bachelorette of Science in Botany, work in field research then, continue my education with a possible focus on ethno-botany.

I have been a member of Phi Theta Kappa's Alpha Eta Iota chapter for two years, the last three terms of which I have served as Membership Director. In addition, I am a student mentor and volunteer math tutor, and enjoy being involved with the many facets of civic and environmental work, both on and off campus.

I feel that I truly understand the importance of higher education and my main goal as Northern District Executive is to help promote Phi Theta Kappa and the College Completion Program, both representing values in which I believe and strive to uphold.

Hello Phi Theta Kappans! As many of you know that this is my second term as a regional officer. I felt good with my first term, but I thought I could make a greater difference with one more opportunity and have an extraordinary year for the Rocky Mountain Cascade Region!

I am currently attending the College of Southern Idaho as a liberal Arts major. To be honest, I have changed majors a few times, but I now know what I would love to work day and night to make a difference in. I realized that I love school, and I would love to be able to help patients that are in their darkest moments and be able to perform neurosurgical procedures that were not possible just five or ten years earlier. Medicine is evolving at a rapid pace, and I love the education that has power to turn cries and sorrow to joy and laughter.

Like many Phi Theta Kappa members, since I have joined and became active at the chapter and regional level, I started having dreams about careers that can have a greater impact in society. I traveled thousands of miles meeting other members, sharing information, and making lifelong friendships because of this priceless organization. There are no limits to what anyone can achieve.

This is my favorite quote:

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible." ~T.E Lawrence

Let us all have dreams with open eyes to improve The Rocky Mountain Cascade Region to heights that we have never seen!

I grew up in Provo, Utah. With the exception of living in Texas for 3 years and Pennsylvania for a summer, I have lived in Provo all of my life. Starting at age 13, I competed for 6 years and coached gymnastics (beginning to Elite) for around 30 years. I'm married with 4 fantastic children, whose ages are from 25 to 14. I enjoy going on walks, making jewelry, reading, and scrapbooking. Currently I'm in school aspiring to become a nurse.

I am studying criminal justice at TBCC and very close to finishing my degree. My eventual goal is to be a law enforcement officer with the local Sheriff's Department where I live. I would like to get a Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice eventually. Anyone that knows me really well knows that I am always a happy person and rarely upset. I love life and live every single day to the fullest. I believe in a strong family unit. I think there is nothing better than great family and friends. I was born and raised a fisherman, and I will die that way. I love anything that has to do with the outdoors.

I decided to run for regional office because I believe I have a great attitude and very optimistic about what we can do as a region. I bring great ideas, and I am very open minded. We are going to great things this year as well as the years to come. If you have any questions about anything feel free to get a hold of me, and I will answer to the best of my ability.

This is my third year as regional coordnator, and I am looking forward to building the region. The regional officers are here to help chapter officers, advisors, and members. One of the goals of the team is to bring awareness of Phi Theta Kappa to your campus. Let us know when we can come help you promote your chapter and encourage students to complete their degrees.
